The Reckless Way of Love--GIVEAWAY!
"How can we ever give up thinking and longing for love, talking of it, preparing ourselves for it, reading of it, studying about it? It is really a great faith in a love that never dies." --Dorothy Day, The Reckless Way of Love
St. Dorothy has been an incredible force in my life--I admire her determination, her strength, and her excellent writing abilities (plus, she def struggled with Feeling All the Things, which I greatly identify with). Also, she just gets it. She truly saw Christ in people, where the world only saw need and despair. And so I was beyond honored to be asked to write an introduction to a new collected works of her writings entitled The Reckless Way of Love: Notes on Following Jesus.
Here's an excerpt from my introduction:
"What made her such a radical? Was it the kerchief she wore in her hair? Her intense writing style? Her involvement in politics while refusing to be conscripted into any political party? Was it her lack of material possessions or her firm belief in the inherent dignity of al people? Or her commitment to the church despite her differences and disappointments? I thought it was a combination of all of these things when I first discovered Dorothy in my early twenties. Now over a decade later, I have a different answer: her radicalness stems from the transformative love of Christ she experienced throughout her very long and sometimes very lonely life."
I would love to give out three copies of this book to you, my readers. It is small and easy to read, truly a book of "notes" collected from her various writings and letters and journals broken up into themes. You could easily use it as a devotional, as her thoughts tend to spur on further reflection. It's a book for our times--a book for suffering, for perseverance in the face of great evil and inequality, a book calling for love in a time when so many are filled with hatred.
The good people of Plough publishing put together this collection and I am so glad they did. Go on over and check out their site for more information on The Reckless Way of Love, or you can also pre-order the book on Amazon (currently it is $6!).
To enter to win a copy of the book, simply comment on this blog post. You can say anything you want, but feel free to introduce yourself/talk about your plans for Lent (if you have any!). I will choose the three winners on Wednesday. Be sure to include your email when you comment so I can reach you!
